53 THE ADVERBIAL EXPRESSIONS

(Adverbia Tujuan dan Ekpresi Adverbial)

Pada bab ini akan dibahas beberapa macam kata keterangan:

1. Adverbials of purpose
Adverbial of purpose digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan “why”. In order
to selalu disingkat dengan “to”. (In order) to digunakan untuk ekspresi kata
kerja (verb expression) seperti (in order) to buy some pencils, to learn
English, to cash a check, to pass the test. Sedangkan for digunakan untuk
frase kata benda (noun phrase) seperti for some pencils, for the books, for
new pair of shoes, for a cup of coffee, for a comb.

Rumus:
(in order) to + Verb Expression.
Atau:
for + Noun Phrase.

Perhatikan contoh-contoh the adverbials of purpose:
• Why did Rafael go to the store?
Mengapa Rafael pergi ke toko?
Rafael went to the store (in order) to buy some pens.
Rafael pergi ke toko untuk membeli beberapa pena.
Rafael went to the store for some pens.
Rafael pergi ke toko untuk membeli beberapa pena.

2. Adverbial expressions (by + a noun ata with + noun phrase)
Adverbial expression digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan “how” bisa
digunakan juga untuk preposisi by + sebuah kata benda dan preposisi with
+ frase kata benda. By + sebuah kata benda menunjukkan komunikasi
(communication) dan transportasi (transfortation) di mana, noun tidak
diberikan artikel setelah preposisi, misalnya by plane, (bukan by a plane),
etc. Sementara with + frase kata benda menunjukkan instrumen (instrument)
dan cara (means).
